NEC sitting over Assam project proposals

JORHAT, Nov 16: The North Eastern Council (NEC) — nodal agency for economic and social development of the north-eastern region — is yet to take up many agricultural project proposals from Assam that were sent to it long back.

According to sources, the Assam Agriculture Department had sent a proposal to the NEC for cold-storage projects with allied marketing facilities in Jorhat, Barpeta, Darrang and Cachar districts at an estimated cost of about Rs 1,801 lakh in 2004-05, but the NEC seems to be sitting over the proposal.

The State Agriculture Department had also sent six other project proposals to the Council for processing units with grading and packaging facilities for ginger, orange, banana, tomato and turmeric with an estimated cost of Rs 244.15 lakh. The State Government had proposed to construct two such units each in Tinsukia, Kamrup and Cachar districts. The government also proposed to set up a market information network throughout the State and prepare a regional atlas in Guwahati with an estimated cost of Rs 99.86 lakh in the same year. But surprisingly, the NEC is yet to take up any of the project proposals for reasons best known it only. THE SENTINEL
