SILCHAR, Nov 12: In the backdrop of the AGP’s debacle in the recent by-election in one of its strongholds, Dhekiajuli, the Muslim leaders of the party may gear up to put pressure on those at the helm of party affairs for a change of leadership, said former minister Sahidul Alom Choudhury.
Talking to The Sentinel today, Choudhury said the Muslim leaders of the party will issue an ultimatum to the party to replace its president Chandra Mohan Patowary and make former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta the party president. “Mahanta is the only leader in the AGP who has all-community support in this multi-lingual and multi-religious State,” he said, and added: “Brindabon Goswami and Chandra Mohan Patowary lack the ability to lead the party. It’s only Mahanta who can bail the party out from the crisis it has been going through since 2001.”
Choudhury said if the party is sincere in toppling the Congress, a joint forum comprising the AGP that represents the Asomiya Hindus, AIUDF championing the cause of Muslims and the Trinamool Congress capitalizing on the Bengali Hindu sentiment should be formed. He said he has been negotiating with the Trinamool Congress for the last couple of months and a concrete decision about the Muslim leaders of the AGP joining the Mamata Banerjee’s party will be taken in the last part of this year. “Frankly speaking, the Muslim leaders in the AGP are a worried lot as the party is being run at the diktat of the BJP,” Choudhury added.
Since the AGP-BJP combine failed to prove itself as a strong front, the Hindu Asomiyas and Bengalis took the side of the Congress in the by-poll in Dhekiajuli constituency. “At this critical juncture, only a joint forum of AGP, AIUDF and the Trinamool Congress can challenge the Congress,” Choudhury said.
Choudhury claimed that the Muslim leaders of the AGP would sit for talks with the party leadership on the issue of leadership and then take their decision. “If the party is ready to distance itself from the BJP and replace its present leadership with Mahanta, then only the Muslim leaders will remain with the AGP,” he added.
