ITANAGAR, Dec 6: Despite a cold war waged by students’ organizations of the state led by AAPSU, the State unit NSUI today successfully completed its election process and elected Kafa Bagang as the new State unit president for the next two years.
Bagang, who was earlier the vice president under outgoing president Honipa Sono Yangfo, emerged the winner from amongst three contenders for the coveted post. While Bagang voted 35 votes, other contenders Padi Abing and Taba Chomi followed with 20 and 17 votes respectively.
As per NSUI norms, Padi Abing will don the seat of the vice-president and Chomi would become the new general secretary.
NSUI sources today said that the membership drive in the State was completed on November 26 last. On December 4, it conducted its delegate committees’ elections for colleges and districts, who in turn voted today to elect the new executive council of the State unit. Sources further said that in the Statewide drive about 3660 new members were recruited across colleges and districts, who elected at least 111 delegates to elect the State unit. However, many of the elected delegates could not attend the State executive council elections held today.
The first-ever election of the State unit NSUI was conducted under NSUI Election Commission Chairman Rohit Choudhari, Pradesh Returning Officers Dipankar Tripathi and Amolok Singh and Observer AK Mazumdar.
Expressing satisfaction over the process, outgoing President Honipa Sono Yangfo said that considering the difficult circumstances the response and the outcome has been quite satisfactory. Incidentally, Yangfo will remain in the State NSUI history as the first and only president to serve the union for five years at a stretch.
Meanwhile, Karbi Dulom and Mary Lombi have been elected as the national delegates from the state. They are now entitled to participate in election of the national NSUI unit. THE SENTINEL
