Government, NGOs unite on World AIDS Day

SILCHAR/SIVASAGAR/GOSSAIGAON, Dec 1: In view of the growing menace of AIDS everywhere, all the districts of Assam observed the World AIDS Day with much ado. The Central and the State Government has also launched several awareness campaigns in association with NGOs to put a check on the spreading of the deadly virus. One such NGO, which is serving the people with commitment, is the Rotary Club.

The Silchar Branch of Rotary club organized a street show on the occasion of World AIDS Day today by dramatizing the evil effects of the disease by projecting AIDS in the shape of a demon to wreck a person mentally and physically. The street show, besides drawing crowds around, also bagged applauds from the viewers from all classes.

The message conveyed in the street show is to create consciousness among the people about the symptoms and the causes due to which a person can contract the disease. Barak Valley is fast emerging as a region with high incidence of AIDS, which is a cause of alarm. So far, the States of Manipur and Nagaland have been the worst hit with the disease but, according to official records, the entire Northeast is gradually slipping into the claws of the disease.

In conformity with the worldwide observation of the day, World AIDS Day was observed in Sivasagar with a day-long programme. In Sivasagar, the day was observed under the aegis of District Health and Family Welfare Department in Association with the district administration.

Health Services Joint Director Dr N Bhuyan presided over the meeting and Dr Udayaditya Rajkonwar delivered the welcome address.
