DIBRUGARH, Dec 11: The New Dibrugarh Railway Station at Banipur that has been under construction for almost four years saw the first long distance train chugging out in the evening here today. The Dibrugarh-Jaswantpur Express, which will travel to Bangalore, was flagged off during the evening hours.
Work on the largest railway station in entire Northeast started in 2006. Controversy dogged the construction work with many voicing doubts about its completion. According to railway sources, an amount of around hundred crore rupees has been spent in building the new station. Provisions have been made for twenty-six railway tracks. However, only three of them are complete. The construction of a footbridge is over, while another is nearing completion.
The day is historic also for upper Assam as trains will now travel to Guwahati through Moran and Sivasagar, shortening the distance to the city. Moreover, this is the first time that railway communication has touched these two places. Till now, long distance trains used to ply through Tinsukia Junction and Duliajan. THE SENTINEL
