KOKRAJHAR, April 20: In a retaliatory action, the NDFB swamped Batabari village and Bangal Bazar under Karigaon police outpost and set the houses of five families belonging to BPF supporters on fire last night at about 8.30 pm in Kokrajhar district.
Danen Basumatay, who is secretary of BPF’s election office at Bangal Bazar whose kitchen was also burnt down, said the NDFB militants who came to the village and opened several rounds of blank fire to dislodge people and started to burn the houses. He also said, that the panic stricken people ran helter-skelter to safety place. In the inferno, Dhaniram Basumatary lost two thatch houses including a kitchen, Anaram Basumatary, Danen Basumtary, Bangal Basumatary and Chanda Basumatary lost one each, mostly kitchen including a medical house.
The BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary rushed to the spot soon after the incident at night. The senior BPF leaders including party treasurer DD Narzary visited Batabari and Bangal Bazar to take stock of the situation today. As many as 17 empty cartridges of various arms were recovered from the site of incident.
It may be mentioned that, the house of one Bistiram Basumatary of Udangshri in the same area was burnt down by BPF activists just a day ago. THE SENTINEL
Governor declares local holidays from April 22 to 24
JORHAT, April 20: The Asom Governor SC Mathur has declared April 22 to 24 as local holidays in the areas falling in the jurisdiction of poll constituencies namely Jorhat, Kaliabor, Guwahati, Mangaldai, Dhubri, Lakhimpur, Tezpur, Kokrajhar, Dibrugarh, Nagaon and Barpeta HPC, in view of the mid-phase Lok Sabha election. The declaration is made in all state government offices and educational institutions. The Governor also declared April 23 as local holiday under the NI Act, 1881 made irrespective of Central government officials, Public sector undertakings, Corporations, Boards, Banks, Educational institutions, etc. The Governor further declared April 23 as a paid holiday in all factories, Plantations (Including Tea plantation), Shops and commercial establishments, Establishment for Public entertainment or amusement, Contractual establishments, Firms and such other industries, Workshops, Commercial and business establishments, Banking institutions, etc. THE SENTINEL
