Assam Election
DIBRUGARH, April 20: The Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) of Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council (SKAC) has earned the ire of the members of the community for his open support to the Congress.
In a recent press statement, the CEC and his deputy, Milan Sonowal and Tangkeswar Sonowal respectively, had called on the people, including the Sonowal Kacharis, to vote for the Congress candidates– Bijoy Krishna Handique, Paban Singh Ghatowar and Nari Narah, since the party had taken steps for the overall development of the ethnic groups.
However, certain members of the community have termed the two office bearers’ support the height of sycophancy. Pointing out a contradiction in the statement and historical facts, they said that the demand for an autonomous council was raised during the Congress led government citing their failure to ensure the community’s development. In their statement to the press, Bikash Sonowal and Jogen Sonowal said that the various tribal movements grew as an outcome of the misrule of the Congress, which has been in power for a major period since Independence. They alleged that the Council had failed to fulfil the needs of the people, who had pinned high hopes on them.
The two members of the Sonowal Kachari community said that when the CEC faced stiff criticism from Sonowal Kachari Students Union, Sonowal Kachari Jatiya Parishad and Sonowal Kachari Nari Xantha, he took the initiative of forming parallel organizations just to hold on his power. Alleging corruption and nepotism in the Council, they pointed out that the body received just half of the government grant of Rs 6 crore in the second year of its formation because of failure to produce the utilization certificate of the Rs 4 crore in the first year.
Bikash Sonowal and Jogen Sonowal also said that questions could be raised over the stance of the SKAC since it was part of the government machinery and the model code of conduct bars any government servant or body to express their support for any particular political party or candidate publicly. THE SENTINEL
