Hooch toll rises to 10, judicial probe ordered

DIBRUGARH, April 20: The District Magistrate of Dibrugarh has directed Additional Deputy Commissioner Tosheswar Muktiar to institute a judicial inquiry into the incident of death after consuming illicit liquor at Lakribam Tea Estate under Tigkhong Police Station last night. That the said magisterial enquiry will be a mere eyewash can be inferred from the fact that the directive issued on April 19 has asked the ADC to submit his report by April 24.

Nine persons — Jekak Haria, Tulshi kharia, Ghatowar Garh, Bulet Bhumij, Lakhiram Bhumij, Aithu (Tuklu) Kurmi, Mantu Bhumij, Laxman Bhumij and Chameli Kharia — died after consuming country liquor (haria), preliminary inquiry reports said. Two other affected persons — Rajesh Bhumij and Rajesh Kharia — have been admitted to the Assam Medical College and Hospital, and of them Rajesh Bhumij died today. The postmortem examination was done at the AMC under the supervision of an executive magistrate. THE SENTINEL
