Jonai Election

SILAPATHAR, April 21 – Election campaigning has reached fever pitch at Jonai LAC for the Lakhimpur LS seat for the polls scheduled on April 23. This time 2,12,569 voters of the LAC will exercise their franchises in 196 polling stations.

Congress candidate Ranee Narah, AGP-BJP alliance candidate Dr Arun Kr Sarma, Sanmilita Gana Shakti Party’s Dr Ranoj Pegu, CPI candidate Bhogeswar Dutta, Samajwadi Party-supported candidate Minu Buragohain, Shiv Sena-supported candidate Gongadhar Dutta, etc., are all canvassing in the rural areas, but it will be a straight contest among AGP-BJP alliance, Sanmilita Gana Shakti and Congress at Jonai.

In 1996 LS election, Congress’ Bolin Kuli got 17,160 in this LAC, while BJP candidate Susen Konwar received 9,979 and MMK candidate Dr Ronoj Pegu got 28,214.

In 1998, Mising Mimag Kebang (MMK) candidate Dr. Ranoj Pegu got 35,455, followed by AGP candidate Dr Arun Kr Sarmah (27,650), Congress’ Ranee Narah (20,394) and BJP’s Uday Sankar Hazarika (16,022) at Jonai.

In 1999, BJP candidate Uday Sankar Hazarika got 26,474, while Ranee Narah got 18,713, MMK candidate Dr Pegu got 26,822, AGP candidate Sorbananda Sonowal got 29,895 at Jonai LAC.

In the 2004 parliamentary election, Congress’ Ranee Narah, supported by TMPK/MMK, got 56,894 votes while AGP candidate Dr Sarmah got 51,117, BJP’s Uday Sankar Hazarika got 14,529 votes at Jonai LAC.

In 2006 legislative election, Sanmilita Gana Shakti candidate Bhuban Pegu won from the jonai LAC. This time Sanmilita Gana Shakti is being backed by Mising organisations while the AGP candidate is being supported by BJP. ASSAM TRIBUNE
