This is a tradition, in fact continuing through centuries among the Hindu followers of the country. They have been celebrating this auspicious occasion as ‘Nandustav’ in high spirits since very long. The ‘Boka Bhaona’ is also a part of this celebration, which is very popular among the village people even today. At the same time, the celebration of this special show is very exceptional too.

It is an inevitable custom of our villages in every year. The tradition of performing ‘Boka Bhaona’ in our village is very old”, said Ramjoy Bora, an octogenarian man of Teok Sonari Gaon, when expressed his feelings before The Sentinel.

A member of ‘Gayan-Bayan’ in the ‘Boka Bhaona’ Ghanakanta Kakoti, said that the Bhaona is performed in Ankia method promulgated by Srimanta Sankardeva and as many as fifteen members of ‘Gayan-Bayan’ participate to perform it. The ‘Gayan-Bayan’ is a very imperative part of ‘Boka Bhaona’, which is performed at the very beginning of the drama.

Chandeswar Bora, the director of the main drama informed that, he has been continuing his service as a director of ‘Boka Bhaona’ since ten years back. He said, “In our village the bhaona is staged in Kamalabaria type and more than fourteen actors like – Kansha, Daibakee, Basudev, Krishna, Nanda, Jasuda and Gorga Rishi play their roles to present the Lord Krishna’s activities in his childhood”.

Noteworthy that, the play of ‘Boka Bhaona’ was composed by Gopal Ata as titled ‘Janam Sarit’ in Brajawali language. The followers of Vaishnavism have been staging this play beginning from Basudev-Daiboiki’s marriage scene. In the play, the villagers recite ‘Krishna Ghosa’ in the ‘Naamghar’. The villager also sprinkle water in enjoyment and become muddy in the floor of ‘Naamghar’. They play with mud as a sign of merriment to celebrate the occasion of Lord Krishna’s birth. Therefore it is called ‘Boka Bhaona’. THE SENTINEL
