Multipurpose Women Societies receive financial assistance under 100-day agenda

GUWAHATI, Sept 16: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on assuming office for the second time had announced that each Ministry should identify such activities that need to be pursued in the next 100 days. In pursuance of the directions of the Prime Minister, the Asom Co-operative Department distributed cheques to Multipurpose Women Societies at a function held at Rabindra Bhavan in Guwahati today as per the 100-day agenda of the Department.

About 275 Multipurpose Women Societies will receive financial assistance from the Co-operative Department in the first 100-days. According to sources, Rs 3.75 crore has been allotted for this purpose. Speaking on the occasion, State Cultural Affairs Minister Bharat Chandra Narah said,“Multipurpose Women Societies were formed at the panchayat level with the objective of the economic empowerment of women. These societies take up projects and schemes for empowering women. But due to financial constraints they have not been able to develop much. Hence this move to provide financial assistance to them.”

The Minister also said gaon panchayats should provide technical assistance to these Multipurpose Women Societies. About 35 gaon panchayats have been entrusted with the responsibility of generating a market for the goods produced by the Multipurpose Women Societies, he added.

In addition, the Government will start a system of grading among the Multipurpose Women Societies in order to encourage health competition between them. “This will enhance the efficiency of the Multipurpose Women Societies and ensure time-bound implementation of all projects and schemes,” said Narah.
