Workshop on tobacco control held

GUWAHATI, Sept 16: “Pictorial health warnings still have not gained momentum in Asom,” said Voluntary Health Association of Assam (VHAA) senior programme officer Jyotika Baruah at a media advocacy workshop on tobacco control in Guwahati today.

The Cigarettes and other Tobacco products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade, Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act 2003, prohibits smoking in all public places including some other prohibitions. The main provisions of the Tobacco Control Act includes – prohibition of smoking in public places (section 4); prohibition of advertisement, sponsorship and promotion of tobacco products (section 5); prohibition of sale of tobacco products to and by minors and sale of tobacco products within the radius of 100 yards of educational institutions (section 6); displaying of pictorial health warning on tobacco products packs (section 7) and regulation of tar and nicotine contents of tobacco products (section 11). But nothing concrete has been achieved so far.

Speaking on the occasion as a distinguish guest, noted cine personality Pranjal Saikia said the district administration should take steps to make the mission successful. He also appealed to the media to play a vital role in this regard. THE SENTINEL
