AGP-BJP seat sharing still uncertain

GUWAHATI/ NEW DELHI, March 4: The AGP-BJP seat-sharing arrangement has become more complicated with the AGP setting certain conditions that are not acceptable to the BJP national leadership. With the polls fast approaching, both parties are now actively considering the prospects of fielding their own candidates in all the 14 Lok Sabha constituencies.

An AGP team, comprising party president Chandra Mohan Patowary, working president Phani Bhushan Choudhury, general secretary Padma Hazarika and others, had left for New Delhi on February 28 to finalize the seat-sharing arrangement with the BJP. The first round of talks was held between both parties on March 1. The talks failed, which prompted both parties to hold another round of talks today. However, today’s talks also failed to yield any results.

Though both parties said that today’s meeting had to be cancelled due to the death of BJP legislature party leader Mission Ranjan Das’s brother, sources said the meeting was adjourned as both parties failed to reach an understanding over a few issues.

The prestigious Guwahati Lok Sabha constituency is proving to be the main hindrance for both parties to reach an arrangement for the forthcoming polls. Though the AGP has agreed to hand over the Guwahati seat to the BJP, it has set a condition that the BJP would not field national vice-president Bijoya Chakraborty as its candidate for the seat. However, the BJP national leadership is against the AGP’s condition.

Sources said the BJP had conducted a pre-poll survey which predicted a win for the party in the Guwahati constituency if it fielded Bijoya Chakraborty.

The failure of today’s talks has cast apprehensions over the very possibility of a seat-sharing arrangement between the AGP and BJP. Mediators are trying to find a solution, and while both parties might reach an agreement over the issue, there are also possibilities of both failing to do so. The Sentinel
