Ripun Bora gets bail in Topno murder case

GUWAHATI, March 4: Sacked Education Minister Ripun Bora today heaved a sigh of relief as the court granted him bail in the Daniel Topno murder case. Bora and the other accused were produced in the CJM court today morning. Along with Ripun Bora, another two accused — Kamal Nath and Bolin Phukan — were also granted bail. The next hearing has been fixed on March 16. Talking to mediapersons after the court granted him bail, Bora claimed that he had been framed in the entire episode. “This is a pre-planned political conspiracy against me and it will be unearthed very soon,” he said. On the other hand, Kamal Nath, alias Ankur Nath, also claimed innocence. He said, “I am innocent and I do not have any links with the ULFA as well. Ripun Bora and Tezpur MP Moni Kumar Subba are involved in Daniel Topno’s murder.”

An Adivasi leader, Daniel Topno was murdered before the 2001 Assembly elections. The CBI was investigating the murder and Bora was caught red-handed in New Delhi last year while trying to bribe a CBI officer investigating the case. Shortly after the incident, the CBI filed its chargesheet in the CJM court of Guwahati and accused Ripun Bora of being involved in the murder of the Adivasi leader. The Sentinel
