CBI team arrives for further investigation into salary scam

GUWAHATI, March 4: A CBI team led by joint director OP Galhotra has arrived in the city to take forward the investigation into the Rs 24-crore salary scam in the 3rd and 10th Assam Police Battalion (APBn).

The CID, which was investigating the case earlier, handed over all documents related to the case to the CBI team, which is likely to interrogate the suspects once again. The CBI’s investigation is likely to point out the involvement of higher-placed officials in the scam, sources said.

The scam took place during the period 2001-03, during which the commandants of the 10th APBn were Jiban Singh and Paresh Chandra Neog (now retired). The interim report of the CID had established prima-facie evidence in the missapro-priation of more than Rs 15.85 crore during 2001-03 on account of salary being drawn in excess against the officials responsible for the preparation and passing of bills from the Dispur Treasury.

Likewise, the 3rd APBn saw the misappropriation of around Rs 9 crore in this period, the sources said. The government had earlier suspended two commandants of the 3rd APBn — Krishna Das and Indra Gogoi — for their involvement in the salary scam. The CBI is now likely to interrogate Jiban Singh and Paresh Neog, who were commandants of the 10th APBn at that time, to establish their involvement. Sources feel that similar scams worth several crores of rupees have occurred in other battalions as well.
In its preliminary investigation, the CID had suspected the role of the treasury in the scam and called for a detailed investigation into the involvement of the treasury staff. The Sentinel
