DIBRUGARH, March 4: Workers of the Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited (BVFCL) have alleged that the Centre is conspiring to close down the industry. Technical snags have repeatedly brought production work in BVFCL to a halt in the last two years.
Sources said the machines in the establishment are outmoded and need to be replaced. The promise of Union Fertilizer Minister Ram Vilas Paswan to build a fourth unit brought hope for the workers of the industry. However, very little progress has been made since then, they said.
Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Workers’ Association secretary Ajit Chandra Gogoi has leveled the allegation that the Central government was far from interested in reviving the industry. Similar charges were leveled by CITU president Sasa Kamal Handique, who said, “The Centre’s policy has proved its anti-Northeast attitude.” Both organizations said they would have to resort to further agitations to make their voice heard.
