SHILLONG, March 12: The Congress will move a no-confidence motion against the Assembly Speaker BM Lanong on the first day of the budget session of the State Assembly. Taking note of the Speaker’s utterance that two independent legislators, who defected from the MPA to the MUA, are likely to be disqualified. The Congress displayed its displeasure by petitioning before the Assembly Secretariat to allow the ‘no confidence motion’ against the Speaker.
Confirming that the Congress-led MUA has no faith in the present speaker, Congress leader DD Lapang told newsmen, “The speaker’s utterance is enough to question his role, and his threat to disqualify the two independent legislators is sufficient to question his impartiality”.
“There are no two rules for defection”, stated Lapang, even as he questioned the Speaker’s silence on the two independent legislator’s multiple change of allegiance. “They were with the MUA before going to the MPA, and when they came back to us, why the speaker opened up the books of the anti-defection law”, stated Lapang.
Nevertheless, the move on the part of the Congress is to prove its strength through the vote of confidence against the Speaker before taking over the ruling bench with the same number of legislators. A well-placed source in the Assembly attested the receipt of the petition, but the admission to the petition is still unknown. THE SENTINEL
