Vienna Concert on March 11

SHILLONG, March 4: To strengthen international ties through culture, the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) will set up a regional office in Shillong. The setting up of the office was decided in view the Vienna Chamber Orchestra which is scheduled to perform in Shillong on March 11. Monish Singh, who will head the office, told reporters today that the office would bring in foreign cultural delegates to foster cordial relations with other nations through cultural exchanges. Singh said that office will be inaugurated before the concert of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra takes place.

ICCR is about a confluence of cultures, a creative dialogue with other nations. To facilitate this interaction with world cultures, the council has striven to articulate and demonstrate the diversity and richness of the cultures of India both within and outside the country. The concert is being organised to commemorate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Austria and India. The chief feature of the show will be a joint concert by Austria’s leading orchestra, Vienna Chamber Orchestra, and India’s Shillong Chamber Choir, conducted by Neil Nongkynrih of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra at Sri Aurobindo Institute of Indian Culture. Pauline Warjri member of the Shillong Chamber Choir disclosed at a news conference that the music will be presented in a mixture of classical pieces from Mozart and excerpts of music from the film Sound of Music.There will also be a fusion of western and Khasi music and instruments she said. The popular folk opera Sohlyngem will also feature in the concert. THE SENTINEL
