MANGALDAI, Oct 11: In view of the serious allegation levelled against Minister Nur Jamal Sarkar and independent legislator of Dalgaon Illias Ali regarding their full patronage to MUSA activities that had led to the group clashes in Darrang and Udalguri districts last year, various organizations—All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), All Assam Minorities Students’ Union (AAMSU), All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) and Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) have demanded immediate arrest of Illias Ali and Minister Nur Jamal Sarkar.
Mention may be made here that former president and former vice president of Darrang district committee of MUSA Maniruddin Ahmed and Hifjul Kabir in their deposition before Justice PC Phukan Commission of enquiry into the incidents occurred in Udalguri and Darrang districts following the bandh called on August 14, 2008 by Muslim Students’ Union of Assam (MUSA) stated that legislator Illias Ali offered all cooperation and help to the Sonitpur, Udalguri and Darrang district committees of MUSA and even provided an amount of Rs 50,000 for the second foundation day of the MUSA, while Minister Nur Jamal Sarkar extended all possible cooperation and patronage to the MUSA members for their New Delhi tour as well as for the third foundation day of the MUSA. Both the former leaders of the MUSA also raised the allegation before the commission that legislator Illias Ali also put pressure on the Darrang district Committee leaders of the MUSA through Minister Nur Jamal Sarkar seeking their support for the Asom bandh on August 14, 2008, but the Darrang district committee of the MUSA did not extended their support to it.
On the basis of the allegations contained in the written statement submitted before the commission by both the former leaders of Darrang district committee of MUSA, the commission issued notice to both Sarkar and Ali to submit their written statements in reply. Accordingly, Ali appeared before the commission at Mangaldai Circuit House on October 9 and denied all the allegations levelled by the former leaders of the MUSA. Ali also convened a press meet at Mangaldai Circuit House on October 10 and termed these allegations as baseless and fabricated. He further made it clear that certain circles have been levelling such fabricated allegations only to malign his secular image. THE SENTINEL
