Cultural Affairs Department to organize mega ethnic festival

GUWAHATI, Oct 4: A three-day ethnic mega-festival – Aikyatan – will be organized by the Asom Cultural Affairs Department between October 9 to October 11, 2009, at the Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati. Cultural Affairs Minister Bharat Chandra Narah made this announcement at a press meet in Guwahati today.

The main thrust of the festival will be to showcase the life and culture of the different plain tribes of Asom such as Misings, Bodos, Rabhas, Tiwas, Deoris Hajongs, Pati Rabhas, Sonowal Kacharis, Karbis and Adibashis. They key highlights will be a cultural festival, ethinic food festival and display of traditional dresses of the ethnic tribes. The costume show of traditional attires will be held on October 11.

The three-day festival will be kickstarted with a colourful cultural procession on October 9 from the Dispur Parade ground to the Kalakshetra premises. The procession will be flagged off by the Cultural Affairs Minister. An exhibition on tribal art, culture and craft will also be inaugurated on the same day by WPT and BC Minister Pramila Rani Brahma. Seminars, film screenings and cultural programme will be an intrinsic part of the ethnic festival. The cultural programme will showcase the music and dance of different ethnic groups of Asom and performances by artists invited from Orissa, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat and other Northeastern States.

Besides, a few personalities will be felicitated on the concluding day for their invaluable contribution to tribal art and culture. Asomiya artists – Somnath Bora and Dr Prassana Gogoi – who brought laurels to the State and rest of the country by winning medals at the recently held Seoul Drum Festival 2009 in South Korea will also be felicitated. The Cultural Affairs Department will reward an amount of Rs 10 lakh to Bora for winning a gold medal in individual drum beating competition and Rs 5 lakh to Gogoi for winning a silver medal in individual string instrument playing competition respectively, after the forthcoming Diwali festival.

Prior to this, district-level ethnic festivals were organized by the Cultural Affairs Department in places like Jagiroad, Boko, Kokrajhar and Majuli.

Addressing the meet, Narah said the Department is geared up to celebrate the Rakh Mahotsav and plans to organize a Bhaona Samaroh at the Judges Field in Guwahati shortly.

He also announced that a North East Tribal Cultural Museum will be established at Nazirakhat in Sonapur shortly. A plot of 228-bigha-land has already been allotted by the Asom Government at Sonapur for the said project.

On the issue of CBI chargesheet against former Secretary of Kalakshetra Gautam Sarma on charges of fund misappropriation, Narah said his Department has nothing to say in this regard as the CBI will take necessary action. In the meantime, the Department will take steps to pay-off any credit due by the Kalakshetra authorities, he said. THE SENTINEL
