Sangma predicts coalition State Government

NYAPIN, Oct 5: When petite Agatha Sangma landed today at the almost unused helipad at Nyapin, a remote ADC outpost in Kurung Kumey district, a history was created. It was for the first time that a Union minister has set foot in this forlorn territory.
Agatha, the Union Minister of State for Rural Development, might have come with an aim to garner support for NCP candidate for Nyapin Assembly constituency, Bamang Felix, but whatever might be the reason, it was a festive time for the local populace. Hidden in the hills of the Himalayan belt, Nyapin buzzed with excitement.
Agatha, accompanied by father and NCP national general Secretary PA Sangma and state unit president L Wanglat, is on a whirlwind campaign in constituencies from where the NCP is fielding its candidates. Since yesterday they have been on a chartered chopper. Felix, the NCP nominee from this constituency, is having a straight fight with INC heavyweight and Education Minister Tatar Kipa.
Appealing to the people of Nyapin, Sangram and Passang, who gathered here at the general ground, Agatha asserted that with its national presence, the NCP was the only party that could usher in development in the State, which she claimed was stagnant for several years.
Calling for support, she said that NCP national leaders, particularly those in the Central Cabinet, would always be available for every developmental work in the State. In chaste Hindi, Agatha claimed that a parivartan is only possible through change of leadership.
Talking in the same line, former Speaker PA Sangma, in his typical Hindi, lambasted the present leadership of the State for stagnating the developmental process of the region.
Blaming the State Government of frequenting New Delhi with a ‘begging bowl’, Sangma said the State has ‘real’ potential of growing at par with other advanced States of the country. He emphasized connectivity, tourism, horticulture, floriculture and agriculture as the path to progress.
With the NCP having its ministers in key portfolios, he said that the State would surge ahead on the path of development if the party was extended public support.
Foreseeing a coalition State Government after the Assembly elections, Sangma hinted at Felix being granted a place in the Cabinet.
“This may the first time that a Union minister has visited this place but it will not be the last one,” he said and added that the NCP would see to it that its Central leadership frequented the area and evolved solutions to the problems with local consultations.
Meanwhile, L Wanglat, a former Minister of the State, exuded confidence that NCP would win 20 seats from the 36 constituencies it has fielded its nominees.
Asserting winnability options of 50-50 in rest of the seats, he said that the total strength of victorious NCP nominees may go up to 27. Wanglat too predicted a coalition government after the elections. THE SENTINEL
