Demand for trains route through Jorhat Rly Station
From a Correspondent
JORHAT, Dec 16: The Rail Seva Suraksha Samiti, Jorhat while hailing the NF Railway’s decision to introduce a number of trains from Dibrugarh to different destinations, has demanded that all these trains be routed through Jorhat Railway Station (JRS), the district headquarters, so that the people here can benefit from the service.
In a note to the NF Railway authorities, JK Agarwalla, president and JC Baruah, secretary, respectively of Rail Seva Suraksha Samiti, Jorhat stated that the demand for all major passenger trains from Tinsukia-Dibrugarh be routed through Mariani, Jorhat, Furkating and Golaghat had been made on and of for the last five years.
The trains that would ply from the newly-built Dibrugarh Station via Moran and Sivasagar– namely Dibrugarh-Yesvantpur (Bangalore) (0202/0201) weekly, Dibrugarh-Kamakhya tri-weekly (0570/0569), Kamakhya and Dibrugarh bi-weekly via New Tinsukia (0567/0568) and Dibrugarh-Simaluguri passenger (909/910), should all touch Jorhat Railway Station so that the people could avail of this benefit.
For all major trains, the people here have to travel almost 30 to 45 minutes by a vehicle to reach Mariani Railway Station where these trains halt. This entails wasting precious time not only in commuting but also one has to reach Mariani hours ahead of the scheduled time as public conveyance to Mariani from here stops after 7 pm. As most of these trains halt at Mariani between 10 pm to 4 am, this means spending hours at the Mariani waiting room. THE SENTINEL
