Nine-day police remand for Arabinda, Raju

GUWAHATI, Dec 17: The Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court, in its hearing held at a camp court in the Guwahati Central Jail today, again sent ULFA chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa, ‘deputy commander-in-chief’ Raju Baruah and Arabinda Rajkhowa’s bodyguard Raja Bora to nine-day police custody in connection with three fresh cases slapped on the trio. All the three cases are blast-related cases under Paltan Bazar, Bharalumukh and Bhangagarh police stations in Guwahati. The police wanted remand of the three for 14 days, but the court granted three days for each of the three cases against them, amounting to nine days in total. The 12-day police remand of the ULFA trio that had been granted earlier ended today.

In view of the security hiccups while producing the ULFA leaders before the CJM Court on December 5, the police today produced them in a camp court inside the Guwahati Central Jail where the entry of the media was barred. The family members of the ULFA trio were, however, allowed to go inside the jail campus.

According to sources, the State Government had appealed to the Gauhati High Court to allow the hearing of cases related to Arabinda Rajkhowa, Raju Baruah and Raja Bora in a camp court inside the Guwahati District Jail mainly because of security concerns. Today’s hearing in the camp court was in accordance with the approval of the High Court.

Arabinda Rajkhowa’s elder brother Ajay Rajkonwar and his sister met him in the jail today. “We are ready for peace talks with the government, but not if the main demand with which the ULFA was formed is left out. It’s because of this fact that the peace process has been stalled. I didn’t surrender, and you can prove it through the RTI Act,” Ajay Rajkonwar quoted Arabinda Rajkhowa as telling him.

Meanwhile, an unofficial report is doing the rounds that Arabinda Rajkhowa and Raju Baruah held a meeting with jailed ULFA leaders Sashadhar Choudhury, Pradip Gogoi, Mithinga Daimary and Pranati Deka inside the Guwahati Central Jail today. While Arabinda Rajkhowa’s lawyer Bijon Mahajan denied the report, Ajay Rajkonwar evaded a reply when asked about the report. Though Arabinda Rajkhowa, Raju Baruah and Raja Bora were taken to the Guwahati Central Jail at 2.30 pm, they were produced before the camp court as late as at 4 pm. THE SENTINEL
