GUWAHATI, March 16 – The Assam Pradeshik Mahila Samity on Monday demanded of the State Government to declare March 16, observed as birth and death anniversary of the first feminist of Assam Padmashree Chandra Prabha Saikiani, as Women’s Day (Naari Divash) in Assam.

The samity submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi requesting him to consider the demand.

On the occasion of the birth and death anniversary of the multifaceted personality today, the samity organised a memorial meet here in the capital city where many distinguished citizens recalled the contribution of Saikiani towards emancipation of women.

The meet, presided over by noted social worker Kamal Kumari Baruah, evaluated the fiery personality of the first feminist and agreed that the contribution of Saikiani towards infusing the spirit of nationalism in the masses during the freedom movement had not received sufficient focus from the scholars.

Invited speaker, Dr Anuradha Dutta, a leading academician, while dwelling at length on the life and contribution of Saikiani, said that she is incomparable as there is none like her who felt and saw the future of the women. Dr Dutta said that Saikiani saw woman as an individual and urged the fairer sex to think independently and stand on their own feet.

Dr Dutta also spoke about the political role of Saikiani and opined that she would always be emulative for the younger generation.

Dr Dutta highlighted the foresight of Saikiani who voice raised for unity amongst the women so that they could fight for their rights, stressed on the literacy of women so that they could solve their own problems and called upon her sex to improve their working skills.
