Rahul on Singh

MANGALDAI, April 20: Rejecting BJP leaders’ statement that Dr Manmohan Singh is a weak Prime Minister, AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi today said that during the tenure of NDA, terrorists had dared to attack Parliament in the national capital.

Addressing an election rally in Mangaldai today, Gandhi accused the BJP of creating divisions in the society. On the NDA slogan of ‘India Shining’, he said instead of the country, only the houses of the NDA leaders were shining under the NDA rule.

On the achievements of Congress candidate Madhab Rajbongshi during his tenure as MP in the 12th and 13th parliaments, Rahul Gandhi said that Madhab Rajbongshi had taken personnel initiative for improvement of Mangaldai-Bhutiachung PWD road, life line of Udalguri and Darrang districts. The ground reality, however, is such that the condition of the road is horrible. Gandhi also appreciated Madhab Rajbongshi for the setting up of the first blood bank in the northern bank of the Brahmaputra at Mangaldai Civil Hospital.

Earlier, Rahul Gandhi, accompanied by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, APCC president Bhubaneswar Kalita and AICC observer KK Rao, landed at Kharupetia by a private helicopter. He was escorted to another chopper immediately after addressing an election rally at Misa in Nagaon district.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and APCC president Bhubaneswar Kalita also appealed the people to vote for Congress to ensure the safety and security of the religious minority community.

Our Dhubri Correspondent adds: Political leaders had so far failed to create any wave here, but with the visit of Rahul Gandhi, the campaign seems to have reached a feverish pitch.

Gandhi made his last-ditch effort to save the shaken-Congress bastion due to the AUDF candidate being in the fray. In his speech, Rahul Gandhi appealed to the people of Dhubri to strengthen the hands of the Congress by casting their votes for Congress candidate Anowar Hussain.

He claimed the biggest achievements of the Congress during last five years were the introduction NREGA and Rs 70,000-crore farmers’ loan waiver.

Gandhi said a senior leader of the Opposition is now making hue and cry over the money in Swiss Bank. “What they had done when they were in power, and why is this assurance just before the election?,” he questioned.

In the last general election in 2004, the NDA raised the slogan of India shining but people had not accepted their claim and defeated them, Rahul said.

He also said that Congress never discriminated the people of the country on the name of caste, creed and religion, and said that any one can go anywhere in the country for job and livelihood as India is one.

Gandhi said that he was aware of the problems of flood and erosion being faced by the people and assures to do the needful if Congress comes to power. THE SENTINEL
