AGP says PM’s statement runs counter to CM’s claim

GUWAHATI, Sept 16: That Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed serious concern over the law-and-order situation in Asom twice in the recent past is enough an evidence that the situation in the State is volatile, and the US tour of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in such a situation is uncalled for, said AGP president Chandra Mohan Patowary.

Talking to The Sentinel today, Patowary said: “The Prime Minister said in the conference of DGPs and IGPs at New Delhi yesterday that he was worried over the law-and-order situation in Asom and Manipur. When the Prime Minister uttered such a statement at the recent conference of the chief ministers in New Delhi, Gogoi said that Dr Singh had not said anything about Asom law and order. At yesterday’s conference, the Prime Minister made a special mention of the deteriorating law-and-order situation in Asom. Now what will the Chief Minister say?”

“Since Gogoi is the Home Minister of the State, it is his duty to be in the State when the law-and-order situation is volatile here. This apart, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram had asked the DHD-J to surrender by September 15, but Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi didn’t feel it necessary to be in the State during that period,” Patowary said, and added: “This has clearly exposed his lack of seriousness on the well-being of the State.”

Patowary further said: “Since the Chief Minister has failed to bring the law-and-order situation under control, the Centre should intervene to bring the situation back on track.” THE SENTINEL
